NASA OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR 'INSPIRED' HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

High school students in the United States are invited to participate in NASA's Interdisciplinary National Science Program Incorporating Research Experience, or INSPIRE, through the program's online learning community.

Applications are being accepted from Monday, May 3 through Wednesday, June 30. NASA will make selections for the program in September.  Selectees and their parents will participate in an online learning
community with opportunities to interact with peers, NASA engineers and scientists. The online community also provides appropriate grade level educational activities, discussion boards and chat rooms for participants to gain exposure to careers and opportunities available at NASA.

Students selected for the program will have the option to compete for unique grade-appropriate experiences during the summer of 2011 at NASA facilities and participating universities. INSPIRE is designed to encourage students in ninth through 12th grades to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. The summer experience provides students with a hands-on opportunity to investigate education and careers in those disciplines.

INSPIRE is part of NASA's education strategy to attract and retain students in the STEM disciplines critical to NASA's missions. For information about INSPIRE, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/education/INSPIRE

Parents we have added a Parent Survey to the Parent Page of the school's website.  Your opinions and views are invaluable.  Please take the time to complete the Parent Survey.  As you are aware the Parent Liaison position is being eliminated at the end of this school year.  We want to be certain that there are programs and services in place to keep parents actively engaged in our school building.  We are trying to determine how to move forward with certain services and your input will assist us in doing so.

Credit Repair – Watch Out for Scam Artist

There are advertisements everywhere offering you help with your credit. You will find claims in the newspapers, on the radio, on T.V., on the Internet and even calls from telemarketers, all willing to help you for a fee. You’ve seen the promises:

• “Credit problems? No problem!”
• “We can erase bad credit – 100% guaranteed”
• “Create a new credit identity – legally”
• “We can remove bankruptcies, judgments, liens, and bad loans from your credit forever!”

It is in your best interest to save your money. Don’t believe all of the headlines and catch phrases regarding what can be done in a few weeks to save your credit. Repairing your credit takes time, effort and a personal debt repayment plan. Now there may be items that can be removed from your credit, but these are items that are erroneous or that should have already been removed because you have satisfied the time frame with regards to the credit reporting guidelines.

Watch for warning signs! If you decide to use a credit repair service, beware of companies that:

• Want you to pay for the services before the services are provided;
• Do not tell you of your legal rights and what you can do on your own;
• Recommend that you do not contact the credit bureau directly;
• Suggest that you try to invent a “new” credit report by applying for a Employer Identification Number (EIN) to use instead of your Social Security Number; or
• Advise you to dispute all information on your credit report or take any action that seems illegal, like creating a new credit identity.
Remember following illegal advice and committing fraud may make you subject to prosecution.

Under the Credit Repair Organization Act, credit repair companies can not require you to pay until they have completed the services promised.  No one can legally remove accurate and timely negative information from your credit report. However, the law does allow you to request a reinvestigation of information in your file that you dispute as inaccurate or incomplete. There is no charge for this. Everything a credit repair company can do for you, you can do for little or no cost on your own. According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you can:

• Obtain a free copy of your credit report, once a year or if you have been denied credit, denied insurance, or denied employment within the last 60 days.
• Dispute mistakes or outdated items for free. Simply ask the credit reporting agency for a dispute form or submit your dispute in writing, along with supporting documentation. Do not send in your original documents.

When the reinvestigation is complete, the credit bureau must give you written results and a free copy of your credit report in the dispute results in a change. If the item is changed or removed the credit bureau can not put the disputed information back in your file unless the information is verified for accuracy and completeness, and the credit bureau gives you a written notice that includes the name, address and phone number of the provider.

If the reinvestigation does not resolve your dispute, have the credit bureau include your version of the dispute in your file and in future reports. There is no charge for a reinvestigation.

By law, credit repair companies must give you a copy of the “Consumer Credit File Rights under State and Federal Law” before requiring you to sign a contract. They must also give you a written contract that spells out your rights and obligations. Read these documents carefully before you sign a contract.
Whether you have poor credit or not you should periodically check your credit report. Checking your credit history for accuracy in advance could speed up the credit granting process if you are planning a large purchase.

Parent Liaison Effectiveness

This is a very important message regarding the Parent Liaison positions with Prince George's County Public Schools. The 2010-2011 proposed budget is available for viewing on the PGCPS website. In the proposal the Parent Engagement Division is slated to be eliminated, which encompasses 121 positions. We have prepared a Parent Liaison Effectiveness Survey that can be accessed on the right hand side of the FDHS website Main Page. We are asking parents who feel that they have been impacted by the Parent Liaison position to write a letter addressed to the Board of Education (BOE) and/or sign up to speak at one the next two Budget Meeting scheduled for February 2nd and February 8th. Parents the Parent Liaisons were employed to support you and to ensure that you were made an instrumental part as well as have a voice within the school. This is your opportunity to collectively share your position on this issue with the BOE. Please complete the online survey by January 31, 2010, fax in letters to 301-627-3377 and call 301-952-6115 to sign up to speak at one of the Budget Hearings. If you are signing up to speak, you must call by 4:00 pm. the day of the Hearing.

Individual Learning Plan (ILP)

Has your student come home and shared with you that they have established an Individualized Learning Plan?  What is an Individualized Learning Plan?  The Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is a living document that will be used throughout your student’s years in Prince George’s County Public Schools. The ILP is tailored to your student’s strengths and abilities in an effort to help guide them through their academic years and beyond. The ILP is developed with the important input from your student, along with you as the parent/guardian and with the professional school counselor.  The ILP will:

  • Outline the short and long term goals for each student and the actions, strategies and modifications that will be used to address those goals
  • Identify students individual needs and their learning priorities
  • Revisit each student’s career plans and objectives
In an effort to assist you with helping your student to create a strong and effective Individual learning Plan we have prepared the following “Talking Points” for you to use to open a discussion with your student prior to your ILP meeting with the Professional School Counselor or to assist them with refining their ILP.

Talking Points
  • What are your personal goals?
  • What can you do to help you to meet your personal goals?
  • What are your academic goals?
  • What can you do to help you achieve your academic goals?
  • What do you feel are your strengths and talents?
  • What are some of your interests?
  • How do you feel your academic goals impact your personal goals?
  • Have you thought about life after high school?
  • Do you plan to attend college?
  • If yes, what do you think you want to major in?
  • In not, what path do you plan to take after high school? (Trade school, military?)
  • How is your attendance record at school?
  • What are ways you can improve your attendance (if applicable)?
  • What are your career goals?
Remember it is our goal to ensure that all of our students graduate from high school college and/or career ready.  It is imperative that our students begin to think about and refine their goals and aspirations.
